During the national competition organized by the Spanish editorial group EDITEC, the Mercedes-Benz eCitaro fuel cell, equipped with a hydrogen-based fuel cell range extender, clinched two prestigious awards. A panel comprising 817 managers from transport firms and technical specialists meticulously assessed the participating commercial vehicles intended for both goods and passenger transportation across diverse categories.

With 28 models from 24 companies vying for top honors, the Mercedes-Benz eCitaro fuel cell stood out to the expert jury, securing victories in two categories: “Bus of the Year” and “Ecological Bus of the Year.” The awards ceremony, held in Madrid at the start of the year, marked the recognition of the eCitaro’s exceptional performance and eco-friendly features.

As a fully electric low-floor bus with a fuel cell as a range extender, the Mercedes-Benz eCitaro fuel cell offers a locally emission-free solution for sustainable and efficient mobility in the city. The combination of battery-electric drive with fuel cell to extend the range enables a range of up to 400 km without recharging under average requirements. This means that the eCitaro fuel cell can be used on almost all urban lines that could previously only be served by diesel-powered vehicles. Unlike hydrogen buses with a small backup battery, the fuel cell is not used as the main power source, but is only used to extend the range.

Since electricity from the grid is comparatively cheaper than hydrogen, the fully electric city bus enables particularly economical operation.
