ev.energy, a world leader in delivering demand flexibility services via smart charging for electric vehicles, is now the first company to earn credits in Massachusetts’ Clean Peak Standard (CPS) program from EVs. This milestone signifies a crucial moment for the state, leveraging the transformative impact of electric vehicles in advancing towards a cleaner, more cost-effective, and robust power grid.

Launched in 2020, the MA CPS, a first-of-its-kind initiative, encourages the use of clean energy production or load curtailment during seasonal peak demand – the most cost and carbon-intensive hours of energy production. Under the CPS framework, the state’s utilities can either purchase or generate credits, which are mandated to match their annual electricity retail sales. This started at 3% in 2021 and will climb to 46.5% in 2050.

Through its EV Flex Virtual Power Plant (VPP), ev.energy will shift vehicle charging away from the defined service windows, while always providing drivers with a fully charged battery by their chosen ready-by time. This performance will then be reported to the Department of Energy Resources (DOER) and earn credits for ev.energy, which it will sell to utilities. Finally, ev.energy will then share that revenue with its community of app users, incentivizing EV drivers to adapt their charging behavior to support the grid.

Will Goldsmith, Global Head of Grid Services at ev.energy, said, “Our mission is to make electric vehicle charging greener, cheaper, and simpler and we are thrilled to be part of this cutting-edge program led by the Massachusetts Department of Energy Resources. It is encouraging to see policies like these that put us on a path to unlock the full potential of electric vehicles, as we’ve seen with other distributed energy resources.”

As the world’s largest independent aggregator of flexible EV assets, ev.energy powers active managed charging programs for over twenty U.S. utilities. The company’s platform connects over 120,000 vehicles via on-board telematics or smart home chargers to enable a rapid response to signals issued by grid operators. The ev.energy app empowers drivers to make more informed decisions about their energy usage with a simple interface to set their vehicle charging schedule preferences, monitor charging progress, explore potential incentives, and override managed charging where required.

This achievement underscores ev.energy’s pivotal role in creating a more sustainable and resilient electrical grid in Massachusetts and its dedication to advancing the clean energy transition across North America and Europe. Meanwhile, the Clean Peak Standard program is a testament to the transformative impact innovative policies have in paving the way for a greener, more affordable, electrified future.
